Beaver Creek - Twisp Washington

It takes just a little bit more time to get a horse ready to take hiking.....Back around the end of April I brought home Abrigo from the Creswell Oregon area.....He has been a ball of fun....a lot of hard work...but lots of fun times also.....He is quiet the character.....A big lippy hairy beast.....Because we have intentions to try to pack with him this summer we needed to get him out and see how he reacted away from home and make sure his pack fit.....Saturday was packed with plans since family was in town to visit....So we planned for a early short hike....We have been to the Beaver Creek area many times....Mostly Horse camping at Lighting Creek Campground area....It is a great horse camping area...very well set up....lots of large turn around areas for trailers and easy access to the trails....That is if you have enough muscle to open the barb wire gate....That takes some serious arm strength...Apparently I didn't eat enough wheaties....I wimped out and let my brother do the job....We spent about 45 minutes tacking up and packing the pack...Checking out what we could fit in the bag and the best way to load it....Making sure things would sit on the horse alright before we hit the trail....Made a loop that was about 5 miles.....I was really amazed by how many flowers are blooming still....I was thinking it was going to be pretty much drying up...The rain has helped extend the flower season....The hills were nice and lush....Lots of different grasses....When I have time I love to explore and take pictures of all the different grasses.....The trail is set up for horses, bikes and hikers.....We kept our hike pretty simple....Just spent time letting the horse get comfortable and making sure the pack was riding good....On a nice clear day you can see a nice view of the Sawtooths...We had rain clouds still hanging over...But very pleasant weather....Back to the trailer close around 11....Had a wonderful time loading the horse back up....He apparently wasn't ready to head home.....Made a stop at Blue Star for a shot of Caffeine....And back home before 1....Tired and sleepy we headed to Lake Chelan to soak up some sun and visit with family....It looks like my week is going to be filled with time training a horse to love his trailer.....

Echo Basin, Eastern Washington

Echo Basin was our last early spring hike in the Eastern Washington area. We were planning to hike the Frenchman Coulee side that heads toward the waterfall but changed our mind due to the amount of cars parked at the trail head. So down the road just a little ways we went to hike the Echo Basin trail. Even with a early start the sun was way too bright, not hot, just bright. We hiked up the jeep trail that starts on the left hand side of the road as your facing the Columbia River. Didn't seem like a real exciting trail till we reached the sand dunes, which put us closer to the rock walls. Up and over the sand dunes and on up a goat trail to get above the walls. Without really knowing were we were going we just winged it. Lots of faint trails and trails in the sand, hard to know which was the true trail. The rock walls are huge and fascinating, the columns are even more interesting up close. We hiked until we had a view looking down into Echo Basin, and a nice look at th

Colchuck Lake, Central Cascades

A life time ago in June, we ventured up Colchuck Lake Trail for the first time. A tough, but absolutely beautiful hike. I think the hardest part was the constant climbing over rocks, boulders, and tree roots. It was a fabulous hike, very tiring, but so worth the effort. I had read the description of this trail several times, read all kinds of trail reports and the I think the thing that keep me from trying this trail was the description of the boulder field when you cross the 2nd bridge. This part always seemed rather intimidating. The views looking down the valley towards Stuart Lake are gorgeous, not knowing exactly where Colchuck Lake sat, the trail seemed long. When we reached the lake we had the pleasure of two goats coming to check us out. They stayed pretty close the whole time we ate our lunch and guarded our packs. Lots of hikers coming up and down the trail. We relaxed and checked the pass out and the surrounding area out for folks being more adventures than us.
